Language Arts students will likely have some homework each night. This homework could be any of the following:
- Language Arts comprehension passages (typically every Monday-Thursday for Course 1 students)
- Unfinished work from class that day
- Studying for tests/quizzes
- Independent reading for at least 20 minutes each night
- Correct any graded work that you did poorly on
- Any absent work you need to catch up on

Language Arts - Course 1
Objectives/Standards
- We are focusing on story elements through reading Love that Dog and Hate that Cat by Sharon Creech during the first four weeks. We will then readWesting Game by Ellen Raskin during the second part of the quarter.
- Throughout the novels, we will dig deeper into setting, plot, characters, conflict, theme, main idea, inference, and evaluating evidence. (6.RL.1-9).
- We will be reading, analyzing and writing poems (6.RL.4-5) Writing Informative/explanatory texts (6.W.2) and writing Narrative texts (6.W.3).
Language Arts - Course 2
Objectives/Standards
- We will be starting our quarter with a unit on poetry, while analyzing the literature elements through poems (7RL1-9).
- We will then focus on elements of literature through plays, by reading The Monsters are Due on Maple Street (7RL1-9).
- Through the last part of the year, we will work on elements of literature with Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli. We will be looking at individuality versus conformity as big ideas through this unit. (7RL1-9).
- We will have weekly focus skills to fine tune reading skills. (7.RL1-9)
- We will be focusing on six traits writing, writing fundamentals and research based writing (7.W.7-8). Students will complete several short research projects, as well as larger ones this quarter.
